NEW Psychiatric Nursing Concentration
In order to meet growing needs for psychiatric mental health professionals, the Decker School is developing a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Program. As an interim step in this process we have developed a concentration in Psychiatric Nursing intended to assist nurse practitioners in primary care or long term care settings to meet the mental health needs of their patients. Faculty members may also find these courses valuable. The nine credit program includes assessment, psychopharmacology and two clinical practice courses. A significant portion of the courses will be taught in an on-line format so that campus attendance will be limited. The first course will be taught in fall 2007 and will cover assessment. The concentration is open to students currently enrolled in the masters or post masters programs and also to nurses who already hold a masters degree in nursing. Nurses with baccalaureate degrees in nursing who wish to increase their knowledge and skill in psychiatric mental health nursing may also enroll. At the completion of the nine credits, Binghamton University will award a certificate. This certificate does not provide for certification as a Psychiatric Mental Nurse Practitioner in New York nor does it provide for eligibility to take national certification examinations.
For more information or to register for the fall course, contact the Graduate Office, Decker School of Nursing, kpratt@binghamton.edu or tgrabo@binghamton.edu. Watch for announcements about the full Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Program.
