The accelerated baccalaureate program is a 12-month, three-semester program leading to a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in nursing for applicants with a baccalaureate or higher degree in another field who have decided to pursue professional nursing. Students selecting this option will complete all required courses in the nursing major in a sequence that provides accelerated progression to achieve the undergraduate program objectives. This selective program is designed for the mature, highly motivated student.

RNs with baccalaureate degrees in fields other than nursing will want to access the RN Program and RN Accelerated Program information. For general transfer information, see the Transfer Program.

Admission Requirements

Completion of bachelor's or graduate degree with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 (on 4.0 scale) and a 3.0 average in the following prerequisites:

  • two composition courses
  • two semesters of human anatomy and physiology
  • two semesters in general chemistry including principles of inorganic, organic and biochemistry
  • microbiology
  • introductory psychology
  • developmental psychology
  • statistics

Note: The Decker School of Nursing may require comprehensive examinations in prerequisites or a repeat of coursework if taken more than 10 years ago.

Potential for success in the program is based on prior academic achievement, personal statement, resume, references, ability to study full time for one calendar year, and evidence of prior work or volunteer experience which enhances knowledge of current nursing practice (preferred but not essential).

Degree Requirements

In order to meet the Bachelor of Science degree requirements, students with a baccalaureate or graduate degree in another field complete all upper-division course requirements in the nursing major in addition to the prerequisites. Students are admitted with junior standing and complete 52 credits of required nursing courses at the university. The total number of credits for the Bachelor of Science degree with a major in nursing is 128.

The two year program plan for students with a baccalaureate or graduate degree in another field consisting of 52 credits of nursing course work is also available.

Application and Admission Process

Applicants are advised to submit applications early in the fall semester for the following year. Most admission decisions are made during January and February. Applications are accepted and qualified students admitted until the program is full. In essence, there is no specific application deadline. Note: Due to administrative record keeping, students must indicate that they wish to apply for the fall semester that comes immediately after the summer they intend to begin their program. (e.g., If you plan to start in summer session of 2007, you would apply for admission for Fall 2007.)

Candidates submit an undergraduate application and the Supplemental Admission Form for transfer students. In addition, they must enclose the following along with the Supplemental Admission Form:

  • Two letters of recommendation (one academic reference and one character or professional reference)
  • Resume of work and educational experience

Candidates may provide the Decker School with unofficial copies of transcripts for evaluation and advisement before admission. Applicants needing prerequisite courses to the nursing major may apply for admittance to an earlier semester than the start of their program. Students admitted to a fall or spring semester prior to the start of their program are enrolled as sophomores to complete liberal arts and science prerequisites offered at Binghamton University and may apply as internal candidates to the accelerated program. Prerequisites may be taken at accredited colleges and universities or at Binghamton. Admission to the program is competitive and selective as space is limited.

Please contact the Binghamton University Admissions Office, PO Box 6001, Binghamton University, Binghamton, NY 13902-6001, [607] 777-2171, for applications.
